On Saturday Jeff and I headed out to a stream close to home that I don't fish nearly enough. We went to a section he had fished a little but last year and I had never been to. We arrived midday and it was sunny and warm. The water looked really good but there wasn't much bug activity aside from a few caddis bouncing around so we decided to nymph some of the faster chutes. Right off the bat Jeff hooked and lost a decent brown and followed it up with a another one to hand. Moving upstream we each hooked a handful more all of which were 10-12 inchers.
As we got to the junction with a tributary we saw a beautiful confluence run and proceeded to hook some nicer browns fishing nymphs deep on the bottom.
I got this one on the first drift.
Jeff followed up with another about the same size that jumped out of his hand before we could get a pic. I also hit a couple smaller browns in the same run. The water above the confluence didn't look very exciting so we decided to explore the tributary and it turned out to be a great idea. Jeff hooked and lost one out of the first pool we came to but then it was a bit of a hike before we got to anymore good water.
When we did we noticed a few rising fish so we decided to switch to dries since we already had caught several on nymphs on the day. Jeff working a fish splashing at caddis.
And the culprit. Great colors on these fish!
A few hundred yards upstream we came to a slow very deep pool and several fish were rising. They were spooky in the glassy current but we got a few fish to eat.
Jeff caught a small brown and got refused by another and I had a nicer fish on for a second before the hook pulled free. With not too much time left we moved upstream some more and came to some gorgeous deep nymphing water that we promised to come back to soon.
Above the pocket water was another great dry fly corner and even from a distance we could see several fish rising.
A few more chunky browns were taken along with a small rainbow before the feeding stopped and it was time to make the couple mile hike back to the truck.
Jeff was able to get this killer action shot of me setting the hook on a fish. You can see the splash next to the rock and me setting the hook in the background.
Nothing wrong with these trout on a 4wt!
Pretty cool day with a mixture of nymphs and dries and got to fish a bunch of new water. Definitely will be back a few more times this summer. On the walk out we saw this.....
Sunday night Jeff and I got out again on another local river to look for some hennie spinners. Arriving around 6pm there wasn't much going on. A few fish were splashing around at caddis but nothing consistent. I managed a lone 11 inch brown and rolled another decent fish on an elk hair caddis. We then proceeded to sit and wait on a deep slick hoping for spinners and a few bigger snouts poking up. It was looking like a no go, but then about 830 we started to see spinners collecting in numbers above the riffle upstream. We never got a full blown feeding frenzy but we did get enough bugs on the water to get us about 15 minutes of rising fish. I hit this 13er at the head of the deep pool.
This river has alot of fish, but most are quite small and are under 10 inches. That fish marked my best from this water....only for a few minutes though as I took this fattie just under 16 inches about 5 minutes later as it quitely sipped spinners in a slow backwater. This is a BIG fish for this river, especially on a dry fly.
Needless to say I was ecstatic! Jeff got refused by a fish that may have been even bigger, and then stuck this 14 to close out our night.
Not many numbers of fish but great quality. Just goes to show that what you catch most of the time doesn't really give an accurate sample of the larger fish that are present and only show themselves at select times.
